Red Wolf Ridge

When I set out to photograph the Red Wolf Ridge Exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens, I was struck by the wolves' intriguing behavior. As I observed, three male red wolves appeared to engage in a fascinating social interaction.

The Tunnel Bouncer

At the Red Wolf Ridge Exhibit , one red wolf (Wolfgang Paws) takes his role as "tunnel bouncer" very seriously. He stands tall and proud at the entrance of a concrete tunnel, his eyes gleaming with determination. Meanwhile, his two companions are the epitome of curiosity, their gazes fixed on something intriguing just beyond the tunnel's entrance.

These two troublemakers are clearly up to something, their playful energy palpable even from a distance. It's a scene straight out of a wildlife comedy, with the bouncer wolf holding down the fort while his buddies plot their next adventure.

And Stay Out!!

At the Red Wolf Ridge Exhibit Wolfgang Paws takes his job as "tunnel bouncer" a bit too seriously. With his mouth wide open in a fierce growl, he stands at the entrance of a concrete tunnel, ready to defend his territory from any intruders—real or imaginary.

Meanwhile, his two companions look on, slightly bewildered by his dramatic display. Perhaps they're wondering if he's auditioning for a role in a wolf-themed action movie. Regardless, it's a scene that's both amusing and endearing, showcasing the playful yet protective nature of these magnificent animals.

Meet Wally and Rufus

Together, Wally and Rufus are the dynamic duo of Red Wolf Ridge, entertaining visitors with their hilarious banter and winning personalities.

Rufus - The straight-laced counterpart to Wally, Rufus is the voice of reason in their comedy duo. He often plays the foil to Wally's antics, but his dry wit and clever observations always leave the audience in stitches.

Wally - With a knack for witty one-liners and a howl that can tickle anyone's funny bone, Wally is the star of the duo. He's always ready with a joke and loves to play the role of the mischievous trickster.

Wally, with a mischievous glint in his eye, began his joke: "So, a red wolf walks into a bar with a parrot on his head. The bartender looks up and says, 'Hey, where'd you get that?' The parrot looks down and says, 'Brookgreen Gardens, they've got a great exhibit on endangered species!'"

The red wolf's howl is so melodious, it once convinced a nearby coyote to start a band.

The Red Wolf Ridge Exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens is a four-acre habitat that houses a pack of endangered red wolves, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to observe and learn about these fascinating creatures up close. Often referred to as a "living fossil," the red wolf is a relic of a time when wolves roamed freely across much of North America.

This species is unique in that it is a hybrid of gray wolves and coyotes, resulting in a smaller size and distinct physical features. Red wolves play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to control prey populations and maintain a healthy balance in the food chain.

These wolves, classified as critically endangered, are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) aimed at conserving their dwindling population. The habitat, meticulously designed to mimic their natural environment, provides a safe haven for these majestic creatures to thrive and play a pivotal role in educating the public about the importance of wildlife conservation.
